The database cluster is where centralized information is stored. This can be in the form of a database or virtual directories from IIS. Clustering two databases together means that when one physical server is unavailable, the other one will take over the responsibilities of the original. This system can be used with Sun Microsystems hardware or with Compaq hardware. It can also be used whether an administrator uses Linux or a Microsoft windows product. Currently, clustering in Microsoft is limited to two nodes per cluster. When used within a Database configuration such as Microsoft's SQL server or an Oracle database, the data is stored on shared drives. These storage cabinets are expandable and more reliable than internal drives. It also provides a central location for all cluster components to reside.
